Surface mount components are far cheaper than standard through-hole components and the smaller components tend to be sold in lots rather than singles at a very cheap price.
A completed PCB is far smaller than a conventional PCB and due to no legs sticking through can be mounted using double sided sticky pads or even super glue.
Once you have built a few of these SMT boards, you will probably then prefer to use SMT rather than conventional and you won’t miss drilling all those holes in the slightest.
This book will teach you how to produce PCB’s and fit SMT components using the toner transfer method but will refer to alternative methods along the way.

The title is misleading.The title, the coverpage, and the kindle preview gave me an impression that the author was going to introduce techniques of surface mount. The actual book is about how to make DIY PCB with transfer printing, The information about surface mounting is very poor.

Make Surface Mount PCB's at Home by David McCrea is a book for the reader - electronics professional enthusiast, who is familiar with the computer generated programs the author uses in his examples, not the Electronics hobbiest. I feel this book is overly tedious in it's delivery of the information necessary to perform this task. I personally feel the author is negligent in his description of his book and title and the prospective reader should understand up front how much investment in materials and time he will put forward to make his own surface mount printed circuit boards. For my purposes this book was a waste for me. The methods stated here is more of a process layout which is geared for the young professional who is prepping for a business endeavor to market his own services to produce his own SMD boards. I found it ackward and hard to read, promoting another product necessary for using this method and for my own interest in electronics, is not what I need to make a printed circuit board for SMD components. If after reassessment of this e-book I feel the rating I have given this book is either lacking or too generous, I will return and make changes as necessary. This book is not for my needs, thus the rating. Three stars for this e-book!
